From a cellar in Bradford and a dream of a brewery that was Fresh from the North, we set out to make the best beer in the world. We felt that beer in the UK was either traditional and British—brilliant in many ways but often outdated in others—or ‘craft’ with a fresh approach, yet lacking a true sense of place, often lacking authenticity and meaning. We set out on a mission to create some of the best beer experiences in the world, Fresh from the North. Since then, we have grown to be one of the most popular craft breweries in the UK. In 2014, Northern Monk was truly born. We found our home and our own brewery was set up in a Grade II listed abandoned mill building in Leeds, The Old Flax Store. It’s still our home today. And as Northern Monk grew, so did our reputation. From Faith, our flagship Hazy Pale Ale and one of the first New England style beers to be brewed in the UK, to our unique Patrons Projects series, we’re committed to always being Fresh from the North, growing in stature as we grow in scale, and collaborating with some of the best creatives and breweries in the world.

I ventured into the world of beer making in 2010, and it wasn't long before I took the leap into all-grain brewing, bought some better kit and got creative. To my utter surprise, my first batch turned out better than I hoped. It was at this point I knew what I wanted to do with my life - make beer! I honed my skills over the next couple of year's until I moved into the world of commercial brewing. I learned as much as I could, working with two of the regions most awarded breweries. My passion for beer only got stronger until one day, I decided to take the leap. After a huge amount of planning and years ahead of my original plan, Wilde Child Brewing Co. was born.

Samuel Smith brews at the Old Brewery, Tadcaster – it is Yorkshire’s oldest brewery. Traditional methods of brewing have been retained at The Old Brewery. The brewery still has its own cooper making and repairing all its oak casks; all Samuel Smith’s naturally conditioned draught beer is handpulled from oak casks. The original well at The Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the brewing water being drawn from 85 feet underground. Samuel Smith’s ales and stouts (except draught Sovereign and Extra Stout) are fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ fermenting vessels made of solid slabs of slate which give the beers a fuller bodied taste, using the same strain of yeast since the nineteenth century. All Samuel Smith’s beers are brewed solely from authentic natural ingredients without any chemical additives, raw material adjuncts, artificial sweeteners, colourings, flavourings or preservatives. All Samuel Smith’s beers and ciders are suitable for a vegan diet (except cask conditioned Old Brewery Bitter and bottled Yorkshire Stingo).

Originally forming a strong friendship whilst working together at L&P Chemical Works, The Meanwood Brewery was born of DISASTER. After a particularly heated debate about the true nature of orange juice, the four founding members - Gaston, Brewster, Rutherford and Ian - parted ways to go about their duties. Little did they know their lives were about to change FOREVER… In a deafening crash the QUANTUM ENGINE that Brewster and Ian were working on exploded in a flash of blinding white light. Gaston and Rutherford rushed into the building - ablaze with green fire - to save their comrades. Pulling them from the wreckage, they vowed never to let discussions about orange juice escalate lest they part ways on a sour note unable to reconcile. Over the weeks that followed each of them began to manifest strange abilities. Gaston was able to pair hops in a way that elicited new and exciting FLAVOURS beyond the normal tired old descriptors like ‘citrus’, ‘tropical fruit’ or ‘dank’. Brewster found himself able to influence yeast at the cellular level, asking them to produce ESTERS here-to-unknown to beer. Rutherford was able to sense the exact MALT quantities and types in order to produce the perfectly balanced backbone for any beer. Finally, Ian was able to win FAVOUR with all who listened to his golden tongued patter about the allure of the beverage these four were now able to create thanks to these unique powers.
