Located in the heart of Clare Valley, Knappstein is housed in the heritage listed Enterprise winery and brewery, established in 1878. It all began with Fanny Filgate, the daughter of enterprising Irishman Edward ‘Paddy’ Gleeson, best known for establishing the township of Clare. Fanny inherited her father’s entrepreneurial streak, opening the Enterprise Brewery in 1878 to satisfy thirsty local miners. As the copper mining industry took off, so did Fanny’s beer sales and she was the proud owner of the brewery for almost three decades. Fanny’s legacy lives on thanks to Knappstein Enterprise Winery & Brewery taking up residence in the original, heritage-listed building, with wines first produced under the Tim Knappstein Enterprise Wines label in 1974. Today, Knappstein’s winemaking team is led by Glenn Barry, who honed his skills in the Clare Valley and as far afield as Sicily, the Okanagan in Canada and Napa. Glenn’s winemaking philosophy reflects his love of fresh wines, with vibrant and pure flavours. Inspired by its rich brewing heritage, Knappstein opened a fully functioning microbrewery in 2006, and released the Knappstein Enterprise Reserve Lager, a premium Bavarian-style beer.

Barossa Valley Brewing’s genesis was far from the lush rolling hills of the Barossa, but in the far away shores of the United States. Denham, our brewery founder, was in University in 1990, (supposed to be) studying Economics and Business but instead, was falling in love with craft beer. He spent much time with passionate brewers there, falling more deeply in love with this amazing beverage. Upon coming home, he did what any sensible person would do, he started a brewery. We choose the Barossa, as it has an adherence to quality and a culture of experimentation which has allowed it to produce some of the planet’s best beverages. We have learned from the talented people who work and live here to produce world class beers, that sit alongside world class wines. We work with the best local ingredients – whether that be Barossa roasted coffee, local picked cherries or lemongrass tended by local producers. All of us at BVB are foodies and enjoy nothing better than pairing great beer with great food. We wanted to share this joy so in 2011 we moved the entire Brewery about 10 kms north to Tanunda, and started a restaurant and have been sharing the joy ever since. In 1996, the Pikes label was re-introduced by the fifth generation descendant of Henry Pike, Andrew Pike of Pikes Wines in the Clare Valley of South Australia. Lucky enough to work on many different and varied building sites, Mike has been able to bring a rustic yet neat and modern feel to the new brewery. Most if not all materials in the new KIB are recycled and have an amazing story. From local shearing sheds to local quarried stone the brewery is local as hell! So why a brewery? Well, it just makes sense. The Island is lucky enough to have fantastic wineries and even a micro distillery but up until now.

WHAT WOULD A COBBLER, STONEMASON OR DAIRYMAN KNOW ABOUT BREWING BEER? The Coopers Beer story began in a newly established colony with a brilliant accident. After turning his hand to a number of trades, Thomas Cooper discovered his talent as a brewer by accident; when he created his first batch of beer as a tonic for his ailing wife Ann. That day in 1862, was the start of an amazing journey. South Australia was only 26 years old and, although there were a number of well-established breweries, most settlers preferred to drink imported beer from the mother country rather than colonial beer. Thomas Cooper saw the opportunity to create a beer that was free from the ‘peculiar flavour’ of colonial ales – he would introduce an all-natural beer from the very best ingredients. Over 150 years, Coopers has survived economic recessions, wars, government imposts, changing fashions, and a hostile takeover bid. Today, Coopers stands proudly as the sole major brewer 100% owned by Australians, and holds over 5% of the Australian beer market. The descendants of Thomas Cooper still run the brewery, and it's an everyday occurrence to meet a Cooper at Regency Park. So rest assured, Coopers Brewery is in the hands of those who have the same values as Thomas Cooper. Successive Coopers have never lost sight of Thomas’ vision of providing value and quality in the form of healthy beer for an appreciative public, and we intend to continue that tradition.
