About Leatherbritches

Leatherbritches is a small traditional craft brewery that began way back in 1993 as a two and a half barrel plant at the Bentley Brook Inn Fenny Bentley Derbyshire. Twenty years on and two moves later we now brew in our purpose built brewery with our new twenty barrel plant at The Tap House Pub Smisby near Ashby De La Zouch, which gives us the space and capacity to brew 60 bbls a week (17280 pints!) Why Leatherbritches? Before the advent of science and technology Ale Conners used to spill beer on wooden benches which they would then sit on whilst they had their snap (packed lunch!) Judging by how hard they stuck to the seat the strength of the beer could be estimated in order to determine the gravity of the beers for duty payable to the King! Only leather britches were able to withstand the wear and tear of the job and this is where Leatherbritches Brewery gets its name from! Over the last few years sales of our bottled beers have grown dramatically. Our bottle conditioned beers which are bottled by hand at the brewery are now being exported and enjoyed worldwide. We are currently ageing a selection of strong beers in 54 gallon whiskey casks which will be ready to be bottled and savoured late spring, early summer. Beer Festivals and Events are our speciality! No matter how big or small the occasion. Proud to be independent and independently proud!
