About Bishop Nick

Bishop Nick is a 20bbl craft brewery in Braintree. Owned and managed by Nelion Ridley - 6th generation of the Essex brewing family who had Ridley's on the banks of the River Chelmer in Hartford End from 1842 and 2005. Nelion set Bishop Nick up in 2011 and has won notable industry awards for his traditional East Anglian bitters and Limited Edition range. Alex Ratter is chief brewer. The name? Nicholas Ridley is Bishop Nick. Born in 1500, he dedicated his life to the church and became Bishop of London in 1550. His questioning of the Pope’s supremacy over England led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London and he was tried for heresy. In 1555 Queen Mary got her way and he was burnt at the stake. He died a Martyr in Oxford on October 16.
