Sigma-Octantis é uma estrela situada no polo sul celeste, por isso as demais estrelas aparentemente "giram" ao seu redor (o que inclusive dá ótimas fotos de rastro de estrelas). A Constelação do Octante, da qual ela faz parte, tem esse nome em homenagem a um antigo instrumento utilizado para orientação, quando as caravelas atravessavam os oceanos levando consigo a humanidade além de suas antigas fronteiras. A propósito, é essa estrela que representa o DF na bandeira do Brasil. A notação para sua escrita abreviada é a letra grega minúscula sigma seguida da abreviação do nome de sua constelação, o octante:  σ-oct.
