En Galicia se denomina a las serpientes serpes o cóbregas, animal considerado negativo y peligroso. Dentro de los mitos relacionados con ella, destaca la asociación de la serpiente con tesoros ocultos, es decir, es un símbolo de riqueza y la cueva es su hábitat natural.Algunos mitos también identifican a la serpiente con la mujer, creyéndose que si se metía un cabello de mujer en un frasco con agua éste terminaría convirtiéndose en una serpiente. Paradójicamente, la serpiente también se podía convertir en mujer, dispensadora de prosperidad y vida, en madre.En otros mitos, la serpiente abandona la cueva y se vuelve agresora, mata, hasta que la intervención de un héroe o comunidad consigue eliminarla, convirtiéndose así en una metáfora de vida.
